Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs finished their season the way the rest of it went, with a come from behind win in the Super Bowl. This was a very familiar site for the Chiefs, who trailed by at least 10 points in each of their playoff wins this season.
Unlike a typical Super Bowl, this year’s game was played outdoors in very warm weather at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The Chiefs showed off against the San Francisco 49ers for their first Super Bowl appearance in over half a century this past Sunday night.
After early touchdowns by Raheem Mostert and Kyle Juszczyk, the 49ers held a 20-10 lead entering the 4th quarter. Things began to look even bleaker for the Chiefs after Mahomes was intercepted by Tarvarius Moore deep in 49ers territory shortly into the 4th quarter.
However, the Chiefs didn’t let this phase them as they held the 49ers scoreless for the rest of the game and Mahomes and the offense did the rest. Mahomes found Travis Kelce for a touchdown to bring the game to within three and followed it up with a touchdown pass to Damien Williams to give the Chiefs the lead on the following possession.
As per usual with the NFL, the go ahead score came with controversy, as there was no clear angle of whether or not the ball crossed the plane of the end zone. As a result, the officiating crew was forced to stick with the call on the field, saying the call stood, but didn’t confirm it.
Unfortunately for 49ers head coach Kyle Shannahan the 49ers were unable to hold onto their late game lead, despite having one of the league’s premier defenses, reminding many of Shannahan’s late game collapse while he had the offensive coordinator job during Super Bowl LI.
Mahomes and the Chiefs comeback helped head coach Andy Reid secure his first Super Bowl win and also gave him 222 wins for his career. Reid entered the game with the most wins all time for a coach without a Super Bowl win.
Mahomes’ late game heroics were enough to reward him with the game’s MVP award, despite his shaky play early in the game. At 24 years old, Mahomes also became the second youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl, only Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers was younger.
After this year’s playoffs the key question is if there is any lead that’s safe against Mahomes and the Chiefs?
